Archie Burnett è il “Dancing Demon” (o “Dancing Dinosaur” come si definisce lui scherzosamente), di quasi quattro decenni di successi.Ballerino rispettato nella scena dei club, Archie Burnett ha portato il suo personale gusto e il proprio stile nella New York del "Gettin Down", il primo originale Padre della "Casa di Ninja", ritenuto così dal suo fondatore e fratello The Late Willie Ninja, riconosciuto come il nonno del vogueing sin dai primi anni '80.Ha ballato in tutto il mondo diffondendo la sua vibrazione contagiosa alle masse, una sorta di "Party in Bag" per così dire.
Ha insegnato "come raggiungere la zona" ai bambini in Francia, Russia, Giappone, Germania, Svezia, Finlandia, Praga, Vienna, Olanda, Brasile, Italia, ed altri paesi presto si aggiungeranno. E’ stato giudice in gare famose in tutto il mondo: Funkin Stylz-Germania; Dance @ live-Tokyo; Streetstar-Svezia; HDI-NewYork, Mc Hip Hop Contest di Riccione, House Beach One di Rimini.
VOGUE - MADONNA
Vogue, lanciato nell'aprile del 1990, vende quasi 6 milioni di copie. Con l’uscita di questo brano Madonna porta all’attenzione del mondo una danza che diventa un vero e proprio fenomeno di costume.
Il vogueing consiste nell'imitare le pose plastiche delle modelle e dei modelli che appaiono sul noto magazine americano Vogue. All’epoca il vogueing era allora molto diffuso nei locali gay dell’America del nord. E dire che il disco di Madonna era stato concepito come un semplice b-side del singolo Keep It Together. Solo successivamente la canzone è stata inclusa all'ultimo momento in I'm Breathless, l'album che contiene canzoni tratte o comunque ispirate al film Dick Tracy.
Il brano, che secondo una parte della critica ricorda il brano “Deep in Vogue” di Malcolm McLaren sia per il concept del videoclip, dove il movimento delle mani di alcuni rapper ed alcuni passi di danza ritornano non casualmente, sia per la melodia della canzone stessa, con il suo sound dance tipico dei primi anni novanta, oltre ad esortare all'evasione dalla monotonia della vita quotidiana verso la musica e la pista da ballo, contiene anche una sorta di rap di Madonna in cui la cantante celebra alcuni miti di Hollywood tra cui Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Ginger Rogers, Grace Kelly, Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando, Bette Davis e James Dean…… Nel 2006 Vogue, insieme a Jump, fa parte della colonna sonora del film “Il diavolo veste Prada”, interpretato da Meryl Streep.
Archie Burnett is a highly respected underground club dancer in New York City who was one of the prime dancers during the late 70s and 80s, becoming well known for his individual freestyle of "Waacking" and "Vogueing". He was a close friend and assistant of the grandfather of "Voguing", the legend Willi Ninja, and is up until now an striving force in the NYC dance scene. He is invited as a judge for battles, such as for the Funky Stylez 2009 a.o.
He appears in the documentary film Check Your Body at the Door(2001) by Dr. Sally Sommer, (Professor of Dance at Florida State University), that explores the movement vocabulary of legendary NYC house dancers, including Archie Burnett, Willi Ninja, Ejoe Wilson, Marjory Smarth and Conrad Rochester. Made possible in part by contributions from the National Endowment of the Arts, Dr. Somner interviews dancers from the local NYC scene and captures now-vintage footage from the late 80s and early 90s. Check Your Body at the Door now stands as an historical document and testament to the early years of NYC’s house dance culture."I've travelled all over the world doing what I love to do best: that's spreading the house vibe that lives and thrives in the NYC. I have a documentary produced by Sally Sommer, Check Your Body at the Door, that chronicles the lives of some of the dancers that are the life's blood of this underground scene. We began filming in 1991. Now I'm happy and proud to say it has become a historical record of that moment in time. Dancing has always been my voice, my body my instrument and music my passion. Waacking
Waacking is a style evolved from the 1970ies, and is the father of House dance. It was born in the New York Clubs and is based on imitation of actors in early 1900- silent movies. Some say it has influences from Locking and Popping, as it has similarities.
Vogueing
Vogueing is a style developed in the 1980ies and is characterised by poses, similar to the ones of photo model poses with some influences from the Harlem ballrooms of the 1930ies. Characteristics are formation of lines, symmetry, and precision in the execution of such formations and graceful, fluid-like action.
Hustle
The Hustle is a catchall name for several disco dances which were extremely popular in the 1970s. Today it mostly refers to a unique partner dance done in ballrooms and nightclubs. It has some features in common with swing dance. It's basic steps are somewhat similar to the Discofox, which emerged at about the same time and is more familiar in various european countries. In the 1970s there was also a line dance called the Hustle--which is regaining popularity as people throw 1970s theme parties or schools have 1970s dance performances. Modern partner hustle is sometimes referred to as New York Hustle.
